Response to The Woman Warrior

In the short story collection, The Woman Warrior, I read a lot of stories of different women striving for lives in the United States. These women, regardless of their different situations and personalities, share a mutual quality: nationality. They’re all Chinese. Traditional Chinese women, actually. Not saying their wearing or anything about appearance like that, but talking about their values is exactly as traditional as could be imagined as Chinese women.

In the various stories based on these different women mostly born in America, who hold extremely traditional values that women shouldn’t speak in public including school, these women build up a vivid contrary picture with the contradiction they clash with those “rebels” who don’t quite follow the traditional orders they respect. Every time when I read about how those women with traditional Chinese values seem not to be able to understand lots of reasons behind things Americans do, I feel a little bit shocked and sorry for them. Their eyes are blindfolded with their strict mothers’ lecture. The world displayed in front of them is not fully the whole picture. They not only can not accept other women with modern rational opinions’ behavior but also criticize those modern educated women. I imagine if I were one of the blindfolded women like them, living in this world, my world would have been so narrow and shallow! The world I see would’ve been like just a piece of the entire one, and very likely to be, a piece that is not even correct. I realize how blessed I am after imaging myself in the midst of their view of this world.

I’m glad I’m in a world with internet, which efficiently works the exchange and sharing function over through all over the globe, and have been raised in Taiwan, a democratic country where provides sufficient education and other daily supply for me to absorb. Compared to the “Woman Warrior” in the book, I might have been a rebel in their eye, but undoubtedly, I’m a lot more blessed to enjoy the resources.
